Slovenske Konjice

Slovenske Konjice has roots going back to the twelfth century and has long been a crossroads of trade, culture and tradition in northeastern Slovenia. Its name, meaning Slovenian Horses, points to the area’s historical importance for horse breeding and agriculture. The medieval core is a pleasure to explore, with cobbled streets, coloured facades and the Parish Church of St. George as a spiritual and architectural landmark. The Old Town Square is the focus of local life, hosting markets, festivals and open-air concerts throughout the year.

One of the main attractions is Stari Grad (Old Castle) on Konjiška Gora, a medieval fortress on the hill above the town. The ruins give wide views of the valley and are popular with hikers and history enthusiasts, and the climb up through the woods takes less than an hour. The Žiče Charterhouse, a short drive away, is among the most significant monastic sites in Slovenia, with atmospheric ruins, exhibitions and guided tours that reveal the life of Carthusian monks and the site’s spiritual legacy. Founded in the twelfth century, it is often described as the oldest Carthusian monastery in Central Europe.

Slovenske Konjice is surrounded by vineyards and is a hub for wine tourism. The Zlati grič wine cellar, set among the hills, offers tastings of award-winning wines and tours of its modern facilities, and the Zlati Grič Winery on the sun-drenched slopes is a favourite stop. The golf course, also set among the vineyards, gives a round of golf with views of the surrounding countryside.

Families will enjoy Mini ZOO Land, a small animal park with interactive exhibits, and the town’s parks and playgrounds. Outdoor enthusiasts can follow a network of hiking and cycling trails that wind through forests, hills and vineyards and link to the Pohorje Mountains and nearby sights. The Stolpnik summit, with its distinctive lookout tower, is a rewarding goal for walkers, with views across the Dravinja Valley and over the vineyard hills. The gentle terrain and marked routes suit family outings and leisurely exploration.

Cultural life is lively, with seasonal festivals, food and wine events and craft fairs celebrating local traditions. The food scene features Styrian specialities, homemade pastries and regional wines, served in cosy inns and modern restaurants.

Getting to Slovenske Konjice is straightforward by car, with good road connections from Celje (about 25 km), Maribor and Ljubljana. Public buses serve the town, and parking is available near the old town and major attractions. The town is compact and walkable, with bike rentals and local guides for exploring the wider area.

The best time to visit is mid-June to early September, when the weather is warm and suits wine tasting, hiking and outdoor events. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures, blooming landscapes and fewer crowds, while winter brings a peaceful atmosphere and chances for cosy retreats.

Konjice is also a convenient starting point for exploring the Dravinja valley and the lower slopes of Pohorje. A relaxed day might combine the old town and its square in the morning, a lunch of Styrian dishes at an inn, a visit to a winery in the afternoon and an easy walk on the vineyard roads as the light softens. Because the town is small and the sights are close together, it is easy to see a lot without rushing, and prices are lower than in the larger tourist towns.

With its mix of medieval heritage, wine culture and natural beauty, Slovenske Konjice offers a true taste of Slovenia’s Stajerska region, and it works well as a relaxed overnight stop between Celje and Maribor.
