Podzemlje Pece, or the Underground of Peca, is one of Slovenia’s most unusual attractions, combining industrial heritage, adventure tourism and geological interest. It lies beneath Mount Peca, near the town of Mežica in the Koroška region, and is built on the extensive network of tunnels and chambers left by the Mežica lead and zinc mine. Mining here began in the seventeenth century and continued until 1994, which makes it one of the longest-operating mines in Slovenia. Over the centuries miners carved out more than 800 kilometres of tunnels, forming a vast subterranean labyrinth that is now a setting for exploration and education.

Getting to Podzemlje Pece is straightforward by car from major Slovenian cities such as Ljubljana (about 2 hours) or Maribor (about 1.5 hours). Public transport is available to Mežica, from where the mine is easy to reach. All underground activities need advance booking, and visitors should dress warmly, since the temperature in the mine stays cool all year. Helmets, lights and other equipment are provided on site.

A typical visit takes two to three hours, longer if you add a bike or kayak tour. The mine is a good wet-weather plan, and combines well with a walk on Mount Peca, the nearby town of Mežica and the mining museum.
