Otočec

Otočec lies on the banks of the Krka River, a short drive from Novo Mesto, and it expresses the charm and elegance of Slovenia’s Dolenjska region. Its history is tied to Otočec Castle, which dates back to the thirteenth century. Built as a medieval fortress to guard the river crossing, the castle was transformed over the centuries from a defensive stronghold into a Renaissance residence and, more recently, a luxury hotel. Its setting, on a small, tree-shaded island linked to the mainland by wooden bridges, makes it the only water castle in Slovenia and one of the most romantic places in the country.

The castle itself is the main attraction. Carefully restored after damage in World War II, it now houses a five-star Relais & Châteaux hotel, known for elegant rooms, a fine-dining restaurant and exceptional service. Guests and visitors can walk through the landscaped castle park, the Grajski Park Otočec, enjoy meals made with local ingredients or simply sit on the riverbank and watch swans on the water. Wine lovers can follow the Dolenjska wine route, taste Cviček, the region’s signature light red wine, and visit local cellars such as Vinska klet Colnar in the hills of Trška Gora.

Cultural and spiritual heritage can be found in the Church of St. John the Baptist and other historic sites nearby. The village is a popular venue for weddings, special events and culinary festivals, drawing visitors from across Slovenia and beyond. The closeness of Novo Mesto, with its market-town atmosphere, museums and spas, adds to the appeal for those planning a longer stay.

Getting to Otočec is straightforward, with excellent road connections from Ljubljana, Zagreb and other regional centres. The village is easy to reach by car, and parking is available near the castle and park. Public transport options include trains and buses to Novo Mesto, with local taxis or transfers to Otočec. The castle island is small, so a visit is more about atmosphere than about distance: allow an hour for the park and bridges, and more if you plan to eat in the restaurant. Golfers often combine a round with a stay, and cyclists can follow quiet roads along the river toward Novo Mesto.

The best time to visit is late spring to early autumn, when the weather is warm and the parkland is in full bloom. May, June and September offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, while summer brings a lively atmosphere and outdoor events. Autumn is particularly beautiful, with colourful foliage and harvest celebrations in the vineyards.
