Grajski Park Otocec

Grajski Park Otočec is the park that surrounds Otočec Castle, on the banks of the Krka River in Lower Carniola, not far from Novo Mesto. The castle itself sits on a small island in the river, a compact fortress surrounded by water, and the park spreads out on the land around it, so that the whole composition of water, stone and trees feels like a romantic landscape painting. It is the green setting that makes the castle so photogenic, and walking through it is one of the pleasantest short outings in Dolenjska.

The park is laid out in the manner of a landscape garden, with lawns, paths and mature trees, among them old oaks, lindens and plane trees that give deep shade in summer and a blaze of colour in autumn. Wooden footbridges cross arms of the river, and paths follow the banks, so that you can look at the castle from several angles, including the classic view across the water, where the stone towers are mirrored in the calm surface of the Krka. In early morning, when mist lies on the river and the castle emerges from it, the scene is especially lovely. The river is home to waterbirds such as ducks and herons, and kingfishers are sometimes seen flashing along the bank, so quiet walkers with binoculars are rewarded.

The park is open to everyone and has no admission fee, and it is generally accessible throughout the year. It is flat and easy, which makes it good for families with young children, older visitors and anyone who wants a gentle stroll. There are open lawns for picnics and benches for sitting, and in warm weather it is a popular place for a rest. The castle itself operates as a hotel, so the interior is mainly for guests, and the park is where most visitors enjoy the setting. Please keep to the paths, keep dogs under control and take litter away.

From the park you can easily extend the visit. The park suits couples, families and photographers, and it is at its best in spring blossom time and in autumn colours. Allow an hour, longer if you plan a picnic. For a short stroll, it is one of Slovenia’s prettiest spots, and Slovenia has few castle parks so well kept.
