Metlika

Metlika is one of the three main towns of Bela Krajina, the ’White March’ of southeastern Slovenia, and it blends history, culture and outdoor adventure in a small and friendly setting. Its origins go back to the Middle Ages, when the town was a strategic border settlement, and Metlika Castle is a reminder of that noble and defensive past. The castle, perched above the old town, houses the Belokranjski Muzej, where visitors can explore exhibits on local folklore, crafts and the history of the region. The castle grounds and panoramic terraces give views toward the Kolpa River and the surrounding countryside.

The Kolpa River is central to life in Metlika and gives it a natural playground for swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing. Its clear waters and gentle flow suit families and outdoor enthusiasts, while riverside campsites and adventure parks such as the one at Podzemelj offer relaxation and fun. Cycling and hiking trails wind through the vineyards and forests, connecting Metlika to neighbouring villages, viewpoints and natural sights such as the Krupa River spring, one of the notable karst springs of the region.

Metlika is also known for its wine culture. The Vinska Klet Metlika is the largest wine cellar in Bela Krajina, offering tastings and tours of its extensive cellars. The local speciality is Metliška črnina, a dark red blend that has long been associated with the town. The annual wine festival draws visitors from across Slovenia to celebrate the grape harvest, sample local varieties and enjoy traditional music and cuisine. The Hiša dobrot Bele krajine, or the Bela Krajina House of Local Delicacies, is a useful place to taste and buy regional products in one stop. The region’s culinary scene features hearty stews, lamb dishes and the well-known Belokranjska pogača, a savoury flatbread that appears at festivals and family gatherings.

Cultural life in Metlika is lively, with events such as the folklore festival, art exhibitions at Galerija Kambič and concerts in churches and squares. The Tri Fare pilgrimage complex, with its three historic churches, is a spiritual and architectural highlight, and the town’s museums and monuments reflect a mixed heritage shaped by border history, including the influence of nearby Croatia and the Uskok period.

Outdoor activity is easy to arrange. Besides river sports, there are marked routes through the Bela Krajina hills, and day trips can reach Črnomelj, the Kolpa valley and the Gorjanci mountains. Local guides and bike rentals help visitors who want to go farther.

Getting to Metlika is straightforward by car, with good road connections from Novo Mesto (about 30 km), Črnomelj and neighbouring Croatia. Public buses serve the town, and parking is available near the castle and riverfront. The town is compact and walkable, with bike rentals and local guides available for exploring the wider region.

The best time to visit is from June to August, when the weather is warm and suits river activities, wine festivals and outdoor exploration. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures, blooming landscapes and fewer crowds, while summer brings a festive atmosphere and chances for swimming and camping along the Kolpa.

With its mix of historical landmarks, wine culture and riverside adventure, Metlika offers a true taste of Slovenia’s Bela Krajina region, and it is a pleasant base for a few relaxed days of tasting, swimming and cycling.
