Betnava Mansion stands on the western edge of Maribor, in the district of Limbuš, at the edge of the Betnava forest, and it is one of the larger manor houses in the Maribor area. The estate belonged for a long period to the bishops of the Lavant diocese, who used it as a residence and a retreat from the town, and the building has the proportions of a country palace, with long wings and a courtyard. Its history reflects the importance of the church in the region's landscape, where bishops, abbots and noble families owned estates that supported farms, vineyards and woods.

The house has been altered many times, and its present appearance is largely Baroque in style, with later changes. It is surrounded by a park, which gives it a calm and spacious setting, and the park is now used by the people of Maribor for walking, running and picnics. The mansion itself is generally not open to visitors for regular tours, so most people come to enjoy the grounds, where old trees, lawns and paths make a pleasant and shady walk. The forest behind the house, Betnavski gozd, is a popular recreation area for families, with broad, level paths suitable for strollers and bikes.

The surroundings add to the visit. Betnava Adventure Park, in the forest, offers rope courses and climbing for children and adults, and the Maribor Beekeeping Association keeps a presence in the area, reflecting the strong tradition of beekeeping in Slovenia. A small local museum nearby adds to the offer, and the nearby area of Vnukec is covered separately. Limbuš itself lies along the Drava and is a quiet residential district, with views of the Pohorje hills to the south.

Maribor is a good base for exploring the region. The city has a lively old town on the Drava, a famous old vine at the riverside, the Lent promenade and vineyards that reach almost into the town, and Pohorje offers skiing and walking. A visit to Betnava is best combined with a walk in the park and a coffee, and it fits a gentle afternoon after a day of sightseeing in the city. The park is open at all times, and there is no fee to walk in it. For up-to-date information on the mansion's use or any events, contact the local tourist office in Maribor.
