Lesce

Lesce lies in the middle of the Gorenjska region, a vibrant town that works as a gateway to some of Slovenia’s best-known attractions. Its history goes back to medieval times, but it has grown into a modern hub for tourism, sport and recreation. The town’s position on the main road and rail routes between Ljubljana and the Julian Alps makes it a convenient starting point for visiting Lake Bled, Triglav National Park and the wider Upper Carniola region, and it has a railway station that serves Bled as well.

One of Lesce’s main attractions is the Royal Bled Golf Course, described as the oldest and most prestigious golf course in Slovenia. Set against alpine peaks and forests, it offers an excellent round for players of all levels. Nearby, the Lesce-Bled Airfield, also known as the Lesce Alpine Sports Airfield, is a centre for air sports, including paragliding, skydiving and scenic flights over the lakes and mountains. The airfield holds an annual Lesce Airshow, which draws aviation fans from across the region.

Families will find plenty to enjoy. Dino Park Bled is an amusement park with life-sized dinosaur models and interactive exhibits, and Bowling City Lesce is a popular place for indoor fun on wet days. The closeness of Lake Bled means that its beaches, boat rides and hiking trails are easy to reach, while the Sava River offers rafting, fishing and riverside picnics. The Šobec Campsite, on the river, is a well-liked place for campers who want comfort and nature together.

Local heritage gives the town another side. The Church of the Assumption of Mary is a spiritual and cultural landmark, and Legatova hiša (Legat’s House) and Španova hiša are examples of traditional Gorenjska rural architecture, with wooden balconies and steep roofs. The Beekeeping Education Centre of Gorenjska explains the region’s long beekeeping tradition, and the Gorenjka chocolate factory is a sweet stop for visitors with a taste for chocolate.

Lesce is also known for its local culture and food. The town holds markets, festivals and events that celebrate regional traditions, food and music, and restaurants and cafés serve Slovenian and international dishes, including Carniolan sausage, potica and Bled cream cake. Nearby Radovljica Old Town and its Gingerbread Museum give more insight into the area’s history and sweet traditions.

Outdoor enthusiasts can use the many cycling and hiking routes that start in Lesce and run through the countryside to Bled, Vintgar Gorge and Triglav National Park. The gentle terrain and well-marked trails suit family outings and relaxed exploring.

Getting to Lesce is easy by car, train or bus, with good links to Ljubljana (about 50 km), Bled (about 4 km) and other regional centres. The town is compact and walkable, with parking near major attractions and the train station. Bike rentals and guided tours are available for those who want to go farther.

The best time to visit is late June to early September, when the weather is warm and suits outdoor activities, golf and family fun. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures, blooming landscapes and fewer crowds, while winter gives access to nearby ski resorts and cosy alpine stays.

With its mix of sport, family attractions and alpine scenery, Lesce offers something for everyone and works well as a quieter, less expensive base for discovering Slovenia’s Gorenjska region.
