Šobec Campsite

Camp Šobec lies at Lesce, between Bled and Radovljica in Upper Carniola, on the banks of the Sava Dolinka. It is one of the best-known campsites in Slovenia and has long been a favourite with families and groups travelling in the Julian Alps. Its setting is what draws people: tall trees on a flat river terrace, a small lake with clear water beside the river, and views of the mountains on the horizon. The town of Bled is only a few kilometres away, and Triglav National Park is within an easy drive.

The campsite is large and divided into several areas. Pitches for tents, caravans and campervans are arranged under trees, with electricity and water points, and a separate informal area suits those who prefer a simpler camping style. Facilities typically include sanitary blocks, a shop, a restaurant, playgrounds and sports fields, and the site organises activities for children in the main season. Because details of services and rates change from year to year, it is wise to check current conditions and book ahead at busy times such as July and August.

Water is a major part of the experience. The lake is used for swimming and floating on air mattresses, and the river is popular for canoeing and kayaking, while the shaded banks make good spots for picnics. The Sava Dolinka runs cool and clear here, with a lively current, and care is needed with children near it. For land-based activities, flat cycle paths run through the valley, and marked trails lead into the woods and hills, so it is easy to explore without a car.

Lesce itself has a few sights worth a stop, including the Church of the Assumption of Mary, the Gorenjka chocolate factory, with its shop, the Legatova and Španova houses, which preserve local building traditions, and the Beekeeping Education Centre of Gorenjska. The Lesce Alpine Sports Airfield, a short distance away, is a base for gliding and parachuting, and a bowling centre offers a rainy-day option. A little further on, Radovljica's old town and its museums are a pleasant half-day excursion.

The campsite suits families with children, groups of friends, cyclists and anyone who wants a base within reach of Bled, Bohinj and the mountains without paying resort prices. It works best from late spring to early autumn, when the water is warm and the days are long. Day visitors are sometimes accepted for the lake and facilities, but arrangements vary, so confirm locally before arriving.
