Church of the Assumption of Mary

Lesce is a village on the plain between Bled and Radovljica in Gorenjska, best known to travellers for its railway station, which serves Lake Bled, but it also has one of the oldest places of pilgrimage in the region. The Church of the Assumption of Mary stands at the edge of the village and is regarded as one of the earliest Marian pilgrimage sites in Carniola, the historic region that covered much of what is now central Slovenia. Pilgrims have been coming here for centuries to pray to the Virgin Mary, and the church holds a long tradition of devotion that still shapes local life.

The building has medieval roots and has been altered over the years, with a Gothic core and later Baroque changes. Rather than a single style, it reflects the history of the place, with older parts surviving under later layers. A distinctive feature is the separate bell tower, which stands apart from the nave in the manner of many Alpine churches and was rebuilt after a severe earthquake in the early sixteenth century, then given Baroque touches in later periods. Inside, the greatest treasure is a Gothic fresco of the Virgin and Child, a work of the late Middle Ages that is valued for its age.

The church is a working place of worship, so the interior is generally open at set times, around services and special occasions, and it is wise to ask in the village if you want to see the fresco. Dress modestly and keep your voice low. Pilgrimage days around the feast of the Assumption in August bring processions and a festive atmosphere, which is the best time to see the church in use.

The village offers other things to see. The Beekeeping Education Centre of Gorenjska tells the story of the region's beekeeping tradition, the Gorenjka chocolate factory is one of the best known confectionery makers in Slovenia, and Legatova hiša and Španova hiša are historic houses that preserve old village life. The Lesce Alpine Sports Airfield is a base for gliding and parachuting, and Šobec Campsite on the river Sava offers a green spot for stays. Bowling City Lesce provides an indoor diversion, and Bled is only a few minutes away.

The church suits those interested in religious art, medieval painting and quiet places near Bled. Combine it with a short walk through the village or a bike ride along the Sava. While the interior may be locked, the church is a good stop for those who follow Mother Mary devotions, and the fresco of Mary and Jesus is the reason to ask for access. Slovenia’s pilgrim churches reward this kind of curiosity.
