Festive December in Ljubljana 2026 runs from 27 November 2026 to 14 January 2027, according to the Ljubljana Tourist Board. It starts with the festive lights being switched on at 5pm on Friday 27 November on Prešeren Square and peaks with fireworks from Castle Hill at midnight on New Year's Eve. In between, the old town along the Ljubljanica river fills with Christmas market stalls, free concerts on four or five squares, a nativity scene in the castle chapel and some of the most carefully designed street lights in Europe. The full 2026 concert programme and stall list come out in November; the details below are from the 2025 edition unless marked 2026.
Ljubljana does Christmas at a walking pace. The whole festival sits inside a car-free old town you can cross in fifteen minutes, so it suits a long weekend, couples, families with pushchairs, and travellers who would rather have one good mulled wine by the river than queue at a mega-market. Entry to the market and the concerts is free.

The lights and the switch-on on Prešeren Square
Ljubljana commissions its Christmas lights from designers rather than buying them off the shelf, and the switch-on is a small event in itself. In 2025 the lights were switched on at 5pm on 28 November after a children's choir sang on Prešeren Square; for 2026 the switch-on is listed for 27 November, 5pm to 5:30pm, also on Prešeren Square. The 2025 scheme, by the designer Urban Modic, mixed new pieces with restored originals from Zmago Modic's earlier "Cosmic Ljubljana" series. The city put up ten festive spruces, the largest an 18-metre tree on Prešeren Square weighing four tonnes and carrying about eight kilometres of lights, plus 89 smaller living trees that are returned to nature after the holidays.

The best way to see the lights is on foot after dark: from Prešeren Square across the Triple Bridge, along the river on both banks, and up Stritarjeva street towards the town hall on Mestni trg. In 2025 the tourist board also ran guided walks of the decorations (29 November to 6 January) and panoramic boat rides on the Ljubljanica (5 December to 6 January).
Practical info: Prešernov trg, the central square at the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje). Switch-on 27 November 2026, 17:00–17:30, free. Lights stay on throughout Festive December.
The Christmas market along the river
The market is not a single square of huts but a ribbon of stalls along the Ljubljanica. In 2025 the gift and craft stalls stood on Breg, the embankment on the river's left bank, and the food and drink stalls were spread along Breg, Cankarjevo nabrežje, Gallusovo nabrežje, Kongresni trg, Prešeren Square, Stritarjeva street and the corner of Wolfova street and Kongresni trg. There were more stalls on Pogačarjev trg by the cathedral and the central market, and in the courtyard of Ljubljana Castle as part of the castle's own December programme.

The riverside stretch between the Triple Bridge and the Cobblers' Bridge is the liveliest in the evenings, when the bars along Cankarjevo nabrežje spill out onto the embankment. Stall hours vary: the city does not publish one timetable for all of them, so expect gift stalls to close earlier than the food and drink ones, and check the official Festive December pages for the year's opening hours.
Practical info: Breg, Cankarjevo nabrežje, Gallusovo nabrežje, Prešernov trg, Stritarjeva, Kongresni trg and Pogačarjev trg, all within the pedestrian old town. 27 November 2026 to early January 2027. Free entry; most stalls take cards.

Free concerts on the squares
Almost every evening of Festive December has free live music somewhere in the centre. In 2025 there were five stages: Pogačarjev trg (28 November to 31 December, pop and folk acts), Novi trg (15 to 25 December), Mestni trg (school choirs from 15 to 17 December, a traditional Christmas concert on Christmas Eve), Kongresni trg (from 26 December into the new year) and French Revolution Square (30 and 31 December). The 2026 programme again lists Pogačarjev trg, Novi trg, Kongresni trg and French Revolution Square.
Line-ups are mostly Slovenian and regional artists, which is part of the appeal: you are standing among locals, not at a show put on for coach tours. Pogačarjev trg, next to the cathedral and the open-air central market, is the stage that runs longest and has the steadiest crowd.
Practical info: Pogačarjev trg (by the cathedral and central market, a short walk from the Dragon Bridge), Novi trg (left bank, beside Breg), Mestni trg (town hall), Kongresni trg (Congress Square) and Trg francoske revolucije. Free; no tickets.
Ljubljana Castle in December
The castle on the hill above the old town runs its own Christmas programme. In 2025 that meant market stalls in the courtyard, a nativity scene of life-size wooden figures by the sculptor Miro Rismondo in the Castle Chapel (on display until 2 February), and the New Year's Eve fireworks launched from Castle Hill. The 2026 listings again include the castle nativity scene, the Castle Festive Fair and Castle Christmas events.

From the castle walls you get the view of the lit old town and the river below. Go up at dusk and walk down after dark.
Practical info: Ljubljana Castle, Grajska planota 1. Reach it by the funicular from Krekov trg (next to the central market), or on foot up the paths from Stari trg or Študentovska street (about 15 to 20 minutes). The courtyard is free; the funicular and some castle exhibitions are ticketed.
New Year's Eve
The festival ends with the biggest night of the year. In 2025 the central celebration was on Kongresni trg, with concerts for adults from 9pm at four venues, a countdown projected from the castle tower and visible from several streets and squares, and a five-minute fireworks display from Castle Hill at midnight. Families have their own earlier celebration on 31 December, starting at 4pm with a symbolic welcome to the new year at 5pm. For 2026 the fireworks are listed for 1 January 2027, 00:00–00:05, from Ljubljana Castle.
Practical info: Kongresni trg and the surrounding squares. Free. Arrive early for a place on Kongresni trg; the riverside streets fill quickly before midnight.
Day trip: the Live Nativity in Postojna Cave
Postojna Cave, about an hour south-west of Ljubljana by train or bus, stages a Live Christmas Crib (Žive jaslice) along its tour route each Christmas week. In 2025 it ran from 25 to 30 December: the nativity story was told across the five-kilometre cave route with more than 100 performers, music, dance and video projections, with performances several times a day from 1:30pm. Tickets are sold by date and time slot on the cave's own website, every visitor including children needs one, and in 2025 presale tickets were 30 percent cheaper until early November.

The cave stays at about 10°C all year, so bring a warm layer. Combine it with an afternoon in Ljubljana's market for one of the best Christmas days in this part of Europe.
Practical info: Postojnska jama, Jamska cesta 30, Postojna. 2026 dates not yet published; in 2025, 25–30 December, from 13:30. Book online at postojnska-jama.eu. Trains and buses from Ljubljana take around an hour; from Postojna town it is a short walk or taxi ride to the cave entrance.
Food and drink
The market food is Slovenian and Central European: kranjska klobasa (Carniolan sausage, a protected local product) with mustard and bread, roast chestnuts, štruklji (rolled dumplings, sweet or savoury), and doughnuts. The standard drink is kuhano vino, mulled wine, with mulled tea and punch for the cold nights. Many stalls charge a deposit on mugs, refunded when you return them. The open-air central market by Pogačarjev trg runs as usual in the mornings, and the restaurants along the river take bookings for December evenings well in advance.

Getting there and getting around
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is about 25 km north of the city, connected by public buses and private shuttles. The railway and bus stations stand side by side north of the centre, a 10 to 15 minute walk from Prešeren Square. The old town is a pedestrian zone, so once there you will walk everywhere; small electric vehicles (Kavalir) give free rides in the centre for people who need them. Trains from Ljubljana also reach Bled (via Lesce-Bled) and the coast, so the city works as a base for winter day trips.
A one-evening walk through Festive December
- Ljubljana Castle at dusk (funicular from Krekov trg): courtyard stalls, the chapel nativity and the view as the town lights come on.
- Down to Pogačarjev trg: the longest-running concert stage, beside the cathedral and the central market.
- Along Cankarjevo nabrežje to Prešeren Square: the main tree and the busiest food and drink stalls.
- Across the Triple Bridge to Stritarjeva and Mestni trg: the lit town hall and the Robba fountain.
- Back along Breg on the left bank for the craft stalls, ending at Novi trg or Kongresni trg, depending on which stage has the better line-up that night.
The whole loop is about 2.5 km and takes two to three hours with stops.
Where to stay
- Old town, near Prešeren Square or along the river: best for evenings at the market; the quietest rooms face courtyards rather than the embankments.
- Around Kongresni trg and Slovenska cesta: larger hotels, a five-minute walk from everything, and close to the New Year's Eve stage.
- Near the railway and bus stations: practical for day trips to Postojna or Bled and usually cheaper, 15 minutes on foot from the market.
Tips
- Come in the first half of December for the market at full strength without the New Year crowds, or for New Year's Eve itself if you want the party.
- Weekday evenings are relaxed; Friday and Saturday nights on the riverside are busy.
- Walk both banks. The left bank (Breg, Novi trg) is calmer; the right bank (Cankarjevo nabrežje) is where the bars are.
- Dress for damp cold. December in Ljubljana is often foggy and around freezing, and the riverbanks feel colder than the squares.
- Check the programme on visitljubljana.com once the 2026 line-up is published, since concerts change nightly.
