Postojna Cave in Postojna, Slovenia, is one of Europe’s most remarkable karst cave systems and a highlight for visitors interested in geology and natural wonders. The cave is famous for its unique underground railway, built over 140 years ago, which transports guests deep into the heart of the cave’s extensive network. The journey begins with a ride on this historic train, offering a comfortable and memorable introduction to the subterranean world.

Once inside, guided tours lead visitors through a series of vast chambers, intricate passageways, and spectacular formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The cave’s temperature remains a cool 8–10°C year-round, so it’s wise to bring a jacket. Tours are available three times daily from November to March (at 10 am, 12 pm, and 3 pm), and more frequently from April to October, accommodating both individuals and groups.

Postojna Cave is also home to the olm, a rare, blind amphibian sometimes called the “human fish,” which can be seen in specially designed aquariums along the route. The cave’s history as a tourist destination dates back to the early 19th century, and its combination of natural beauty and innovative engineering continues to fascinate visitors. Exploring Postojna Cave offers a unique glimpse into Slovenia’s karst landscape and the mysteries hidden beneath its surface.
