Zreče Spa

Zreče is a small industrial and spa town on the edge of the Pohorje mountains in Styria, in north-eastern Slovenia, and the spa in its name is part of the town's identity. The place is also known for its metal-working industry, which has long been a source of employment, but visitors come mostly for the spa and for the forests and hills that begin above the houses. The town lies in the valley of the Dravinja River, along the route that leads up to Rogla, and it has an easy, working-town atmosphere rather than a tourist-resort feel.

The spa uses warm water and treatments based on materials from the nearby mountains. Peat, mud and herbs from Pohorje are used in baths and massages, a tradition that is based on the belief that peat helps with joint and back complaints, while the water itself is enjoyed in indoor and outdoor pools. The hill village of Brinjeva Gora has a pilgrimage church and wide views over the valley, and the small pond at Ribnik Zreče is a pleasant place for a short walk. At Gostilna Smogavc, regional dishes are served in a traditional setting. The ruined Žiče Charterhouse, a medieval monastery, lies a short drive to the north and makes an interesting contrast to the spa visit.

The best way to enjoy Zreče is to combine one or two spa days with walking. In summer the surrounding forests are cool, in autumn the hills turn gold and the mushroom season begins, and in winter the town is a gateway to skiing.
