Terme Zreče

Terme Zreče is a large spa and wellness resort at the foot of Pohorje, on the edge of the small town of Zreče in north-eastern Slovenia. It is built around thermal water and a mix of indoor and outdoor pools, with additional facilities including saunas, a children's area and a large wellness centre. The resort is organised for visitors who stay several days, and it combines hotels, restaurants and sports facilities in the same grounds, which makes it popular with families, couples and groups.

Wellness here draws on local materials from the surrounding mountains. Pohorje is known for its peat bogs and its dark, hard rock of volcanic origin, and the treatments make use of peat, mud, herbs and stone, which are applied in massages, baths and packs. The Idila wellness centre is the main place for this, offering massages with herbal oils, hot-stone treatments and a range of beauty services. Peat and mud are traditionally used for stiff joints and sore backs, and many guests come for that reason, although visitors with health conditions should consult a doctor before choosing treatments.

The setting is a major part of the appeal. Forest begins just above the resort, and the air is noticeably fresher than in the valleys farther east. Walking paths lead into the woods, and in summer many guests combine a morning walk with an afternoon in the pools. In winter the pools offer a warm contrast to snow, and the Rogla ski area is a short drive up the mountain road. The Pohorje Hills offer walks, Nordic skiing, mountain biking and the tree-top walk, and Terme Zreče works well as a base for visiting them.

Nearby sights include the pilgrimage village of Brinjeva Gora, the small fishpond at Ribnik Zreče, and Gostilna Smogavc, a country inn where visitors can try Styrian dishes such as pumpkin-seed oil salads and roast meats. Zreče Spa and the town itself are covered separately. Like any popular spa, the indoor pools can be crowded at weekends and during school holidays, and quieter times are often midweek and in shoulder seasons. Visitors who plan a stay of at least two nights usually get the most from the programmes, and bookings for treatments are best made in advance.
