Wine Fountain Vodole

Wine Fountain Vodole is a self-service wine-tasting station on the Sončni Raj estate, in the hills above the village of Vodole, close to Lenart and not far from Maribor, in Slovenske gorice. The idea of a wine fountain is simple and popular in Slovenia: instead of visiting several cellars, visitors can taste a range of local wines from a single set of taps, serving themselves in small glasses with a prepaid card or token. This one is described as the first of its kind in the Styrian wine region, and it offers a relaxed way to compare wines from different growers in the area without needing to book individual visits.

The selection includes both white and red wines from local producers, with whites making up the majority, as is typical of this wine country. Slovenske gorice is known for fresh, aromatic whites such as Welschriesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Šipon, and the taps change according to the season and the growers taking part. Non-alcoholic homemade drinks are also offered, so that drivers and children can join in. Tasting is accompanied by simple food that matches the wine, including cold platters of cured meats and cheeses, a smoked pork dish and vegetarian options, and these can be eaten on a terrace that looks out over the estate and the surrounding hills.

The estate has more than wine. Its gardens are managed on permaculture principles, with herbs, vegetables and flowers grown without intensive chemicals, and an apiary that gives a view of beekeeping, a traditional activity in Slovenia. The Bee Flight, a zipline across part of the grounds, adds a playful element for those who want something more active. The mood is relaxed and friendly, and it works well for small groups, couples and families who want to spend an afternoon outdoors.

The fountain is only open on certain days, mainly from mid-week to Sunday, with longer hours at weekends, so it is wise to check before visiting and to book for groups. Entry is modest, and drinks and food are charged separately. The place fits well into a tour of the Lenart area. The Parish Church of St. Leonard, the Cerkev Sv. Treh Kraljev and the Way of the Cross are nearby, Negova Castle is a short drive away, and the Hiša Joannes Protner Winery offers a more traditional tasting. If you plan to drink, arrange a driver, as local roads are winding and the region has strict rules on alcohol.
