Wild Lake (Divje Jezero), just 2 kilometers south of Idrija, is one of Slovenia’s most fascinating natural wonders and a must-see for anyone exploring the region. Protected as a natural monument since 1967 and established as the country’s first outdoor museum in 1972, this mysterious karst lake captivates visitors with its tranquil beauty and hidden depths.

The lake is fed by an underground water system, with a Vaucluse spring that can cause the water to bubble dramatically after heavy rains. Its surface is usually calm, but after rainfall, the water level can rise by up to three meters, adding to the lake’s ever-changing character. Divers have explored its depths to over 160 meters, revealing a labyrinth of submerged caves, though much of the lake’s source remains unexplored and shrouded in legend.

A well-marked nature trail, “Pot ob Rakah,” leads visitors from Idrija to the lake, winding through scenic landscapes and making the journey accessible for families, including those with strollers. The trail is about 2.5 kilometers long and takes roughly 1.5 hours to complete. Once at the lake, you can stroll around its perimeter, enjoy a picnic, or simply marvel at the clear, emerald waters and the surrounding forest.

Wild Lake is also the source of the Jezernica River, Slovenia’s shortest river at just 55 meters long. Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, or curious traveler, a visit to Wild Lake promises a peaceful and memorable experience in the heart of Slovenia’s karst landscape.
