Municipal Museum of Idrija

The Municipal Museum of Idrija is housed in Gewerkenegg Castle, the large building that dominates the town centre. The castle was built in the early sixteenth century, soon after mining began, as the administrative centre and storehouse of the Idrija mercury mine, and its name comes from the German word for mine owners. For centuries it was the place where ore, quicksilver and the mine's wealth were managed, and today it is a good place to see how closely the town's life was bound up with the mine. Mercury mining continued in Idrija until the 1990s, and the whole historic mining area is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The museum's collections tell the story of the town and region in several layers. Exhibits on the mine show tools, models, documents and minerals, and explain how the cinnabar ore was dug, processed and shipped across Europe, as well as the dangers faced by miners, many of whom suffered from mercury poisoning and other illnesses. Other displays cover the daily life of the town and the technologies it pioneered, including water power systems and timber transport. The Idrija Lace collection shows the delicate bobbin lace made by local women, a craft that provided income for families and that is still taught and celebrated in the town.

The castle itself is a pleasant place to wander, with thick walls, courtyards and rooms that have been adapted for display. Guided tours help bring the exhibits to life, and they are especially useful for visitors who want to understand the technical side of the mine. The museum is a good first stop in Idrija, as it explains the context for sights elsewhere in the town and the surrounding countryside.

Afterwards, visitors can walk to the Anthony Mine Shaft, which allows a descent into the old workings, or look at the Water Pump of Idrija (kamšt), a huge wooden wheel used to drain the mine. The Idrija Geopark Visitors' Centre, the Church of Mary on the Rock and the Old School are other stops nearby. Further afield, the Wild Lake (Divje Jezero), the Feldban hiking trail and the Zgornja Idrijca Nature Park provide opportunities for walking. Idrija is known for its dumplings, žlikrofi, and for the Idrija Lace festival, and a meal of local specialities rounds off a day. Opening hours change with the season, so check before visiting.
