Vinarium Tower

Vinarium Tower rises above the vineyards of the Dolgovaške Gorice, the wine hills near Lendava in the far northeast of Slovenia. The steel lookout is about fifty-three metres tall, and its twisting, lattice-like frame looks closer to sculpture than to ordinary architecture. Built in the mid-2010s, it is among the tallest lookout structures in the country, and it gives Slovenia’s flat, open Prekmurje region a landmark that can be seen from far away.

The point of the tower is the view. From the platform you look over the hills and vineyards of Lendava, across the plain of the Mura and Mura-Drava lowlands, and towards the borders with Hungary and Croatia, with Austria a little further off. On a clear day four countries are in sight, which is the tower's favourite claim and not hard to believe given how close the frontiers lie. The vantage is especially good at sunset and in autumn, when the vineyards turn gold and red.

Getting to the platform is straightforward. There is a lift for those who prefer not to climb, and a stairway for those who do, so the visit works for families and older travellers as well as walkers. The surrounding hillside is planted with vines, and the area around the tower is organised for visitors with a small refreshment point offering regional wines and food. The Lendava wine district is known for white wines, among them Laški Rizling and Šipon, and several wine cellars and tourist farms are within easy reach. Anyone interested in tasting can combine the tower with a short wine route.

The tower also gives a sense of the multicultural character of Lendava. The town has a large Hungarian community, and Slovene and Hungarian share official use, so signs and menus are often bilingual. Down in town, the Lendava Castle Museum and Gallery, the Hungarian Community Centre and the Monumental Theater add cultural stops that pair naturally with the lookout, and St Catherine Parish and the Lendava Cultural Center round out a day in the area.

Plan the visit for good weather, since the experience is almost entirely about the panorama, and a hazy or misty day takes much of it away. The tower suits photographers, wine lovers, cyclists exploring the Prekmurje roads, and families looking for a short outing with a high point. Hours and tickets are published locally and change with the season, so check ahead rather than assuming a fixed schedule.
