St Catherine Parish

Lendava is a small town in the far north-east of Slovenia, in the region of Prekmurje, close to the borders with Hungary and Croatia, and its parish church of St Catherine is one of the main historic buildings in the centre. The town is bilingual: Hungarian and Slovene are both official languages, signs and public services are in both, and for generations the two communities have lived side by side. The church is a sign of this mixed heritage, since it serves the Roman Catholic community and has traditionally had services in both languages, and since Prekmurje also has a significant Protestant population, the town's religious life is varied.

The church dates from the mid-eighteenth century, and its architecture combines Baroque features with the more restrained forms of classicism that followed. The exterior is plain and well proportioned, and its slim bell tower is a landmark of the town, rising above the roofs and visible from many streets. St Catherine of Alexandria, to whom the church is dedicated, was a popular saint in medieval and Baroque Europe, a patron of students, philosophers and wheelwrights, and her feast, on 25 November, is celebrated in many places. Inside, the main altar is the focus of the interior, and although many of the original decorations have been altered or lost over time, the space retains a calm, devotional atmosphere.

The square in front of the church holds statues of saints that reflect the town's mixed heritage. One honours St Stephen, the first king of Hungary, who is revered by Hungarians as the founder of their state and Christianity there, and others recall saints important to the Slovene Catholic tradition, such as Florian, protector against fire. Works of this kind show how the cultures of the area have overlapped, and they make a small open-air lesson in the history of the borderland. The church may be undergoing restoration work from time to time, so visitors should check what is accessible before going, and should respect services.

The church is close to other sights in the centre. The Lendava Castle Museum and Gallery stands on its hill above the town, the Vinarium Tower offers views across the borders, the Hungarian Community Centre and the Monumental Theater show the cultural life of the Hungarian minority, and the Lendava Cultural Center and St. Catherine's Church is a related site. Wine cellars in the hills sell the white wines of the area. A walk through the centre takes an hour or two, and a visit to the church fits easily within it.
