Lendava Cultural Center and St. Catherine's Church
Cultural hub by Makovecz; 18th-century baroque church
The Lendava Cultural Center and St. Catherine’s Church are two of the most significant cultural and spiritual landmarks in Lendava, a vibrant town in northeastern Slovenia known for its rich blend of Slovene and Hungarian heritage.
The Lendava Cultural Center, designed by renowned architect Imre Makovecz in 1995, stands out for its striking organic architecture and its role as a hub for the arts. The center features a spacious 444-seat theater and concert hall, regularly hosting concerts, drama, opera, and conferences. Its annual program highlights both Slovene and Hungarian performers, reflecting the town’s multicultural character. The center also houses the local library, making it a lively gathering place for the community and visitors alike.
Just a short walk away, the Parish Church of St. Catherine, built in 1751, serves as the spiritual heart of Lendava’s Roman Catholic community. The church is noted for its elegant baroque belfry and a main altar of considerable artistic value. In the square outside, three statues honor St. Florian, St. Stephen—the first Hungarian king—and Anton Martin Slomšek, a prominent bishop, underscoring Lendava’s historical ties to both Slovenia and Hungary.
Together, the Lendava Cultural Center and St. Catherine’s Church offer visitors a window into the town’s unique cultural landscape, where tradition, art, and faith come together in a welcoming and picturesque setting.
