The Karavanke/Karawanken UNESCO Global Geopark is a cross-border protected landscape on the Slovenian and Austrian sides of the Karavanke mountain range, which forms the frontier between the two countries. On the Slovenian side it covers parts of the Koroška region, around Mežica, Črna na Koroškem, Prevalje and Ravne na Koroškem. The area is about a thousand square kilometres, and it was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2013, so the whole region is presented as a living record of how the Alps were built.

The geology is the reason for the title. The Karavanke lie along an important fault zone where the plate carrying the Adriatic region pushed against the European plate, folding, breaking and lifting the rock. Layers of limestone, dolomite and older rocks contain marine fossils, which show that this high ground was once sea floor. Visitors can read this history in rock faces, caves and old quarries, and information boards across the area explain the sequence. Rocks here span hundreds of millions of years.

The human story is just as strong. Lead and zinc were mined on the slopes of Mount Peca for centuries, and the mine at Mežica closed in the 1990s.
