UNESCO Global Geopark of Karavanke/Karawanken

The UNESCO Global Geopark of Karavanke/Karawanken in Koroška is a cross-border natural wonder that invites visitors to explore the dramatic landscapes and rich geological heritage of the Alps. Spanning over 1,000 square kilometers across Slovenia and Austria, the geopark is named after the Karavanke mountain chain, which marks the border between the two countries. The heart of the geopark in Slovenia is the Peca Underground in Mežica, where an information center, mining museum, and guided tours of an abandoned lead and zinc mine offer a fascinating look at the region’s industrial past.
