Ribniška Koča

Ribniška Koča is a mountain hut on Pohorje, the broad, forested mountain range that rises above the Drava valley in northern Slovenia, in the Koroška region. Pohorje is quite different from the Alps. Its summits are rounded rather than sharp, and its slopes are covered with dense forests of spruce and beech, interspersed with high meadows and, on the highest ground, peat bogs. The mountain culture here has a gentler character, with long, easy ridge walks, forest tracks that suit both walkers and mountain bikers, and a network of huts and mountain farms where people stop for a meal or a night. Ribniška Koča is one of these, and it makes a convenient base for exploring this part of the range.

A mountain hut in Slovenia is a particular kind of institution. Many are run by the alpine clubs or by tenants on their behalf, and they offer simple accommodation in rooms or dormitories, hot meals, drinks and a place to dry wet clothes, often with a stove at the centre of the building. The food is hearty and traditional, typically soup, stew, sausages, strudel and plenty of tea. In winter, the area is a favourite with ski tourers and snowshoers, who use the slopes above the hut, and the quiet forest has an appeal when snow lies deep. Access conditions differ with the season, since roads can be closed or restricted, so check how to reach the hut before you set off, and be prepared to walk the last section.
