St. George's Parish Church
Venetian Renaissance church with St. Mark’s bell tower
St. George’s Parish Church is the crown jewel of Piran, perched dramatically on a hilltop overlooking the sparkling Adriatic Sea. This Roman Catholic church is not only a spiritual center but also a symbol of the town’s rich Venetian heritage. Originally dating back to the 12th century, the current structure was built between 1592 and 1614 in the Venetian Renaissance style, under the guidance of master stonemason Bonfante Torre.
The church’s elegant Renaissance façade, completed in 1608, draws inspiration from the great Italian architect Andrea Palladio, with its harmonious pediment and pilasters. Step inside to discover a beautifully furnished interior, consecrated in 1637, adorned with frescoes by Venetian masters and a collection of medieval sculptures in the baptistry.
One of the church’s most striking features is its bell tower, a faithful replica of St. Mark’s Campanile in Venice, completed in 1615. Climbing the tower rewards visitors with panoramic views of Piran’s red rooftops, Tartini Square, and the endless blue of the Adriatic—a must for photographers and romantics alike.
Legend has it that St. George once saved Piran from a violent storm, and the church remains a beloved landmark for locals and visitors. Whether you’re drawn by its art, architecture, or breathtaking vistas, St. George’s Parish Church is an essential stop on any visit to Slovenia’s enchanting coastal town.
