Park Jamnica – Mountain-biking Park Near Prevalje

Prevalje is a small town in the Mežica valley, in Koroška, the Slovene part of Carinthia, in the far north of the country close to the Austrian border. The valley is surrounded by forested hills, with the great mass of Peca to the west, and farms scatter the slopes at various heights. Park Jamnica is a mountain-bike park on the slopes above the town, set up by a local family on land that was once used for farming, and it has made the area known to riders who want a quieter alternative to the large, commercial bike parks of the Alps. It is a small operation with a personal character, and the trails take advantage of the slopes, meadows and woods of a working hill farm.

The park consists of a network of marked trails, running from relatively easy all-mountain routes to more demanding enduro descents, and the trails are built to flow, with berms, jumps, rock sections and natural features along the way. Some stretches follow the zigzag tracks that the farm family built for its own use, and the story of the land is part of the appeal. A distinctive feature is that the routes are reworked each year, usually in the winter, so that returning riders find new lines and challenges, and the park does not become stale. The park is open from spring to late autumn, when the ground is free of snow, and riders can use shuttle or climb back up the slope, depending on the arrangements, so it is best to check the current set-up with the operators before arriving.

The riding is suitable for people with some experience of mountain biking, and good protective equipment, including a helmet, gloves and knee protection, is essential. Bike rental is available for those who do not bring their own, and riders on e-bikes can make use of the slopes more easily. Beginners should start with the easier trails and build up gradually, and the family that runs the park is happy to advise. The setting is peaceful, with views over the valley and the forest, and the park has a relaxed atmosphere, where riders often chat at the bottom of the run. There is a modest fee for use, paid on site or in advance.
