Napoleon Bridge

Historic stone bridge linking Soča River banks

9.1/10
#3 of 4 in Kobarid

The Napoleon Bridge in Kobarid is a striking historical landmark that spans the emerald waters of the Soča River, connecting the left and right banks in one of Slovenia’s most scenic valleys. The current stone bridge, built in 1750, stands on the site of earlier crossings dating back to ancient times. Its name recalls the passage of Napoleon’s troops, who crossed here on their way to the Predel Pass, adding a layer of Napoleonic legend to the site.

The bridge has witnessed centuries of turbulent history. In 1616, the original structure was destroyed by the Venetians, and during World War I, Austrian soldiers blew up the bridge to hinder enemy advances. The Italians subsequently erected wooden and then iron replacements. The area around the bridge also played a significant role in World War II, serving as a defensive point for the Partisans during the Kobarid Republic. Two monuments beside the bridge commemorate these historic events.

Today, the Napoleon Bridge is a favorite stop for visitors exploring the Soča Valley, offering panoramic views of the river and surrounding mountains. It’s easily accessible by foot, bike, or car, and serves as a gateway to nearby hiking trails and cultural sites. There are no admission fees or set opening hours, allowing travelers to experience the bridge’s history and beauty at their own pace. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply seeking a picturesque spot, the Napoleon Bridge is a must-see in Kobarid.
