Drava Bike Rest Area

Dravograd lies in the north of Slovenia, in the Koroška region, close to the Austrian border, at the point where three rivers meet: the Drava, the Meža and the Mislinja. The Drava is one of the great rivers of central Europe, rising in the Alps in Italy, flowing through Austria and Slovenia and on through Croatia towards the Danube, and a long-distance cycling route follows it for much of its length. The Drava Cycle Route is one of the better known international bike routes, running through several countries on mostly flat or gently rolling terrain, and in Slovenia it passes through Dravograd on its way east. A rest area here is a practical and welcome stop for riders.

The idea of a bike rest area is simple. After a stretch of riding, cyclists want somewhere to sit down, drink and eat something, check the map and, if necessary, do small repairs. The old town sits at the meeting of the rivers, with a medieval centre and a Romanesque church dedicated to St Vid, which stands on a hill above the town. Dvorec Bukovje, the elegant mansion, is part of the local heritage, and the Carinthian Regional Museum has a branch in the town. Other features of the area are the Bicycle Bridge across the river, the Ruined Railway Bridge Over the Drava River, a reminder of the line that once ran through the valley, and the Košenjak Forests on the surrounding hills. The Austria–Slovenia Border Crossing is only a short distance away, so riders can easily continue into Austria.

The route is suitable for a wide range of cyclists, from families with children on short stretches to long-distance tourers. Spring to autumn is the best season, and summer can be warm, so start early. Follow local signs on shared paths and give way to walkers.

The rest area suits cyclists of all levels and anyone who enjoys a riverside break. Combine it with a walk around the town. The Drava Bike Rest Area works best as a pause rather than a destination.
