Carinthian Regional Museum

Dravograd is a small town in northern Slovenia, at the place where the Meža and the Mislinja flow into the Drava, not far from the Austrian border. The valley opens here toward the Austrian province of Carinthia, and for centuries this was a frontier country, part of the historic Duchy of Carinthia. After the First World War the border was drawn along new lines, and the part of Carinthia that lies within Slovenia, called Koroška in Slovene, has kept a distinct identity of its own. The Carinthian Regional Museum, the museum of this region, presents its story, and a part of its work is carried out in Dravograd.

The museum's subject is a very long span of time. The area around Dravograd has been settled since prehistory, and Roman roads and settlements crossed the valleys. In the early Middle Ages the region came under the rule of Carinthian dukes and Salzburg bishops, and it later developed under the Habsburgs, with mining, iron-making, forestry and farming as the main livelihoods. The collection includes archaeological finds, documents, tools, costumes, crafts and objects of everyday life, and exhibitions change from time to time. The chance to compare the displays with the landscape outside is part of the appeal, since the iron and lead of the region explain many of its towns and traditions.

The museum belongs to a wider group of institutions in the Koroška region that present different aspects of its past, including museums of iron-making and mining in neighbouring towns, so a visit to Dravograd can be part of a longer circuit through the valley. In practice, small regional museums often have limited opening hours and rely on guided visits, so it is wise to confirm times in advance and to ask whether a group visit can be arranged.

Dravograd has other things to see within a short walk. The Drava is crossed by a bridge and an old railway viaduct whose ruined remains stand beside it, and the Drava cycle route passes through the town, with a rest area for cyclists. Bukovje Manor, a country house on the edge of the town, adds a historic note, and the forests of Košenjak rise above the valley and offer walking. The border crossing with Austria is only a few kilometres away, and the Austrian town of Lavamünd is close.

The museum suits history lovers, school groups, families and cyclists travelling along the Drava who want to learn about the region. A visit takes an hour or so. Arrange it in advance, and combine it with a stroll along the river.
