Bicycle Bridge

Dravograd is a small town at the northern edge of Slovenia, in Koroška, where three rivers meet: the Drava, which flows in from Austria, the Meža and the Mislinja. The town sits in a deep, wooded valley, and for centuries it was a crossing point, with a bridge and a customs station at the narrow point on the road between Carinthia and Styria. Today it is one of the points where the Drava cycle route enters Slovenia, and the cycling and walking bridge across the river is part of that route, giving a safe and quiet way over the water, away from the busy road.

The bridge is narrow and designed for people on foot and on bicycles, and it provides a good vantage point for looking along the river. From the middle, you can see the broad, dark green water of the Drava, the wooded slopes on both sides, and the roofs and church tower of the town. The Drava here is a working river, with a hydroelectric dam in the town that has formed a long, calm reservoir upstream, so the water looks smooth and wide. Birds such as cormorants and herons often rest on the banks, and the light on the water is attractive in the early morning and evening.

For cyclists, the bridge is a useful link in the long-distance route that follows the river from the Alps to the plains of Croatia. Riders coming from Austria cross the border near Dravograd and continue downstream toward Maribor, and many stop in the town to rest and refuel. A rest area for Drava cyclists is set up with benches and information, and the town has cafes and small guesthouses. The route here is gentle and well signposted, and it suits riders of all abilities. The bridge is also popular with local walkers and joggers, who use it for the loop that circles the confluence.

There is plenty to see in the town and its surroundings. The Carinthian Regional Museum has a presence in the area, Dvorec Bukovje is a mansion with a long history, and the ruined Railway Bridge Over the Drava River recalls the transport links that once crossed the valley. The Košenjak Forests offer longer walks into the hills, and the Austria-Slovenia Border Crossing is close. The bridge is open at all times and free to use, and it is a pleasant stop at any season, though winter ice can make the surface slippery. It suits a short walk from the town centre.
