Winemakers set up more than a hundred stands in the streets and squares of old Ljubljana for a St Martin's tasting walk. Buy a glass and work your way from stall to stall.

On St Martin's Day, when grape must becomes wine by tradition, Maribor holds a mock christening of the new wine on Leon Štukelj Square, with young wines from local growers, a festive meal and live music. Entry is free; tastings and food are paid.

The old town along the Ljubljanica turns into a winter fair for seven weeks, with market stalls, free concerts on the squares, a nativity scene in the castle chapel and fireworks over Castle Hill at New Year. The lights go on at Prešernov trg on the evening of 27 November.
