Emerald lake and source of the Sava River

5.2/10
#2 of 3 in Kranjska Gora

Zelenci Nature Reserve, located just outside Kranjska Gora at the northern edge of Triglav National Park, is a captivating destination for nature lovers and families. Renowned for its emerald-green lake and unique swamp ecosystem, Zelenci marks the source of the Sava Dolinka River—one of Slovenia’s most important waterways. The reserve’s name comes from the Slovenian word for “green,” a nod to the vivid color of the lake, which is fed by cold, clear springs bubbling up from the sandy bottom.

Declared a nature reserve in 1992 and part of the Natura 2000 network, Zelenci is home to a rich variety of plant and animal life, making it a haven for birdwatchers and photographers. Visitors can explore the area via a well-maintained forest trail and wooden footbridges that protect the delicate environment. An observation tower offers panoramic views of the lake, the surrounding meadows, and the dramatic backdrop of the Karavanke and Julian Alps.

The reserve is accessible year-round, with each season offering its own charm—from lush summer greenery to the frosty beauty of winter. Facilities include an information center, a small museum, and a restaurant serving local cuisine. There are no specific admission fees or opening hours, allowing for a leisurely visit. Zelenci is an ideal spot for a peaceful walk, wildlife spotting, or simply soaking in the tranquil alpine scenery.
