Winter Wonderland

Terme Čatež is the biggest thermal spa in Slovenia, set on the flat plain beside the Sava near Brežice, and what it does better than most is to offer warm water fun in the cold months. The Winter Thermal Riviera is the covered side of the resort, a very large indoor complex of pools, slides and play areas under one roof, designed so that families can swim in comfortable temperatures even when snow lies outside. For people who live in the colder parts of Central Europe, from Slovenia to Austria and Croatia, this is a major attraction, and the car park is full at weekends from late autumn to early spring.

The design aims at a tropical atmosphere. Inside the big hall, which is warm and humid, there are palm trees, bright colours and decorations meant to recall a beach resort, and the effect is a sudden change from the grey weather outside. Pools are arranged at different temperatures and depths, from shallow areas for toddlers to deeper ones for swimming, and the water, drawn from the thermal springs, is naturally warm and rich in minerals. Water slides of various speeds and sizes offer thrills for older children and teenagers, and play areas with fountains, mushroom jets and small slides keep the youngest entertained. Quieter corners, with benches and loungers, let adults relax, and some areas include whirlpools and massage jets.

Between swims, visitors can use restaurants and snack bars in the complex, where simple meals, pizza, grilled food and hot drinks are on offer, and wellness areas provide saunas and treatments for adults who want a break from the noise. Winter Wonderland is also the name used for the resort's seasonal programme in the colder months, which adds a festive touch with decorations, special events and entertainment, particularly around the holidays at the end of the year. Animation and workshops for children, the Planeterium Astroport 360, E-bike & E-scooter Rentals, the Casino Lido and Kids Animation & Workshops complement the pools.

Practical points can make the visit easier. It is best to arrive early or to go on a weekday, since weekends and school holidays are crowded, and to buy tickets in advance online where possible. Visitors should bring swimwear, towels, flip-flops and a change of clothes, and use the lockers provided, and wear warm clothes for the dash between the car and the building. The thermal water can be tiring, so it is sensible to rest and drink water, and young children should be supervised closely.
