Vigenjc Vice Nail Forge

The Vigenjc Vice Nail Forge in Kropa offers visitors a unique window into Slovenia’s iron-forging past. Built in the second half of the 18th century, this forge is the last remaining example of what was once a thriving network of nail forges along the Kroparica stream. Kropa, known as the heart of Slovenian blacksmithing, was home to numerous forges that produced over 120 types of nails, which were exported across Europe.

A short five-minute walk from Kropa’s central square brings you to the forge’s simple yet evocative structure. Inside, the blackened walls and 19th-century equipment—including three blacksmith forges, an anvil, and a collection of traditional tools—create an authentic atmosphere. A working water wheel behind the building still powers the forge, demonstrating the ingenuity of past generations.

Visitors can arrange to watch live demonstrations of hand nail forging, either at the Vigenjc Vice Forge itself or at the nearby Iron Forging Museum. These demonstrations bring to life the demanding work that once shaped the daily rhythms of Kropa, where blacksmiths and their families spent long hours at the anvils. The forge’s nickname, “Purgatory,” reflects the humor and camaraderie of those who worked there.
