Velenje Museum (Muzej Velenje)

Velenje Museum (Muzej Velenje) is a cultural gem housed within the striking Velenje Castle, one of Slovenia’s best-preserved castles. Perched on a hill overlooking the town, the castle dates back to 1270 and was transformed into a Renaissance residence in the 16th century. After World War II, the castle served as housing for miners and their families before becoming the headquarters of the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia in 1957. Today, it is the vibrant home of the Velenje Museum, serving the wider Šalek Valley region.

Visitors to the museum can explore thirteen permanent exhibitions, ranging from local history and the story of the Šalek Valley to a fascinating mastodon skeleton and a remarkable African collection assembled by František Foit. The museum also features modern Slovenian art and hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Additional units include the Museum of the Leather Industry and the historic Kavčnik Homestead, offering a broader perspective on the region’s industrial and rural heritage.

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Admission is €4 for adults and €3 for children, students, and pensioners, with free entry for small children, the unemployed, and disabled visitors. Group and school rates are also available.
