Soncni Park

Velenje is a town built in the twentieth century on the edge of a great lignite basin, and from the start its planners gave it generous public spaces, wide streets, modern housing and plenty of greenery. Sončni Park, the Sunny Park, is one of those spaces, a landscaped public park in the centre of the town that serves residents as a place to walk, play, meet and attend events. The planning idea behind it was that a new industrial town for miners and their families should offer a healthy, open environment, and the park is part of how that idea has stayed alive.

The park is a mix of lawns, trees, paths and play areas, with several features that give it identity. A decorative fountain is the focal point of the walking routes, and children enjoy a maze, a playful element that makes the park more than a place to stroll. A community garden, a recent addition, brings neighbours together to grow vegetables and flowers, reflecting a wider trend in European towns towards shared urban gardens. In winter, a seasonal ice rink is set up in the park, allowing people to skate and play hockey outdoors, which fits the strong ice sports tradition of this part of Slovenia. The Tito Statue stands in the great square nearby, the Velenje Museum (Muzej Velenje) in the old castle tells the story of the town, and the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia takes visitors underground to understand the industry that created Velenje. The Children's Festival (Velenje) fills the streets with performances in the summer.
