#2 of 5 in Škofja Loka

The Škofja Loka Passion Play is one of Slovenia’s most extraordinary cultural events, drawing visitors from around the world to the medieval town of Škofja Loka. Recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2016, this folk play is performed only once every six years, making it a truly rare and unforgettable experience. The next performance is anticipated in 2025.

Originating from a penitential procession written by Capuchin monk Romuald Marušič in 1715, the play is the oldest preserved dramatic text in Slovenian literature. It unfolds across the town’s atmospheric streets and squares, with over 900 local volunteers—dressed in elaborate medieval and biblical costumes—bringing to life 20 scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The performance is conducted in the old Škofja Loka dialect, adding to its authenticity and historical significance.

The Passion Play is more than a theatrical event; it is a vibrant expression of community spirit and tradition. Local families, craftspeople, and schoolchildren are deeply involved in its production, ensuring the transmission of knowledge and skills from generation to generation. The play’s preparation and performance foster a sense of unity and pride among residents, while offering visitors a unique window into Slovenia’s religious and cultural heritage.

While specific details about tickets and schedules are announced closer to each performance, witnessing the Škofja Loka Passion Play is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience living history in one of Slovenia’s most picturesque towns.
