Ski Touring

Mojstrana is a village in the upper Sava valley in Upper Carniola, on the north side of the Julian Alps, and it is one of the main starting points for ski touring in this part of Slovenia, and one of Slovenia’s alpine heartlands. It lies at the mouth of two long side valleys, Vrata and Krma, which run deep into the mountains of Triglav National Park, and in winter these valleys become quiet, snowy approaches for people who climb on skis rather than lifts. The setting is dramatic. Triglav's huge north face rises above the head of Vrata, and the surrounding limestone peaks give the area a serious alpine character even though the village itself is small and relaxed.

Ski touring means climbing uphill on skis fitted with removable skins that grip the snow and then removing the skins to ski down. The area offers routes from gentle forest approaches to demanding high mountain days. Snow quality and avalanche risk change throughout the winter, and conditions in these valleys can be hazardous after heavy snowfall or during a warm spell, so it is essential to check the avalanche forecast, carry the standard safety kit of a transceiver, probe and shovel, and know how to use it. Guided days are the best choice for beginners, and anyone unfamiliar with local terrain are much better off with a licensed mountain guide, who can choose a safe route, and several local operators offer guided days and short courses in technique and avalanche awareness.

Mojstrana’s village life has a long mountaineering tradition, and the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana is a good place to learn about it, with exhibits on the first ascents and the history of climbing and skiing in the Julian Alps. Around the village you can also find the Peričnik waterfall, a short walk from the road, which freezes into an impressive ice column in cold winters. Snowshoeing is a gentler alternative for those who do not ski and uses many of the same valleys, and the Kranjska Gora ski area is a short drive away for downhill days. Mojstrana is also known for its friendly guesthouses and farm stays, many of them run by families who have lived in the valley for generations.

Ski touring in Mojstrana suits fit and experienced skiers, and it suits beginners on guided trips who want to try something quieter than a lift-served resort. Plan to start early in the day, take plenty of water and food, and be prepared to turn back if conditions are poor.
