Sadnikar Museum

The Sadnikar Museum in Kamnik is a small house museum built around the collection of one man, Josip Nikolaj Sadnikar, a local collector who gathered objects of history and everyday life in the late nineteenth century and left them to his town. It is often described as one of the first private museums in Slovenia, and it gives a very personal picture of how people in a provincial town saw their past at a time when the idea of a public museum was still new. The collection is not arranged like a modern museum, but rather reflects the interests of its founder, which makes it unusual and charming.

The collection comprises well over a thousand items, and it is a mixture of kinds. There are archaeological finds, coins and medals, weapons, pieces of folk art and household objects, as well as pictures, documents and furniture. Some objects relate to the history of Kamnik and its surroundings, others are curiosities from further afield, and together they show what a thoughtful amateur collector considered worth saving. Visitors can see how everyday objects, such as tools, kitchen equipment, clothing and toys, changed over time, and the older pieces give a sense of how the region lived in earlier centuries.

The house in which the collection is displayed is itself part of the experience. It is a town house in the old centre of Kamnik, with the proportions and details of a nineteenth-century home, and the rooms have a domestic scale that suits the objects. A visit takes less than an hour, and the staff are happy to explain the collection and its history. Opening arrangements vary by season and visitors may need to book ahead, so it is wise to check with the local tourist information centre before going.

The museum fits well into a walk through Kamnik. Šutna Street, the town's old main street, and the Parish Church of Mary Immaculate are near, the Franciscan Library holds rare early books, and the Birthplace of Rudolf Maister commemorates a famous Slovene general and poet.
