Ribcev Laz

Ribčev Laz is the small village at the eastern end of Lake Bohinj, in the Julian Alps within Triglav National Park, and it is the usual arrival point for visitors to the lake. Lake Bohinj is the largest permanent lake in Slovenia, set in a glacial basin below steep wooded slopes and limestone walls, and Ribčev Laz sits where the outflow of the lake, the Sava Bohinjka, leaves it under an old stone bridge. The village is small, with a handful of houses, hotels, cafes and a beach, but it concentrates much of what makes Bohinj appealing: water, mountains, a historic church and an easy start to many walks.

The stone bridge and the Church of St. John the Baptist beside it are the best-known sights. The church is a medieval building with Gothic frescoes inside, and its slender bell tower reflects in the water, which is why the combination of bridge, church and lake has become one of the best-loved views of the area. A statue of Zlatorog, the golden-horned chamois of local legend, stands near the shore, and the boat landing for the lake boats is also here, so the village is the place to start a trip across the water to Ukanc, from where paths lead to the Savica waterfall and the Vogel cable car lifts walkers and skiers to the high ridge.

For those who want to explore on foot, the village is a good base. A path follows the shore of the lake around its length, giving the chance to walk a loop of around twelve kilometres on flat ground, while other trails climb into the mountains and toward the high plateaus, including routes that eventually lead to Triglav for experienced mountaineers. The nearby Vogar viewpoint, reached from Stara Fužina, and the Mostnica Gorge are other popular outings. In summer visitors swim, paddle, kayak and fish in the lake, and in winter cross-country skiing and the Vogel ski area bring a different crowd.

The information centre in the village is a useful first stop, with maps, advice on trails and conditions, and help with bookings and excursions, as well as a shop selling local products. Cafes along the shore offer drinks and meals with views of the water, and hotels and guesthouses of different standards are close by. The village is quieter than Bled and has a more rural, mountain feel.

The village suits families, walkers, cyclists and anyone who wants a calm base among the mountains. Early morning, when mist hangs over the lake and the church is almost deserted, is the best time to see the scene at its most atmospheric, while summer afternoons are lively and busy.
