Vogel cable car

The Vogel cable car carries passengers from the lower station in Ukanc, at the western end of Lake Bohinj, up the steep slope to a ridge at roughly 1,500 metres. The ride takes only a few minutes, and the cabin climbs almost straight up a wall of limestone, so the view of the lake shrinking below you starts almost at once. At the top, a terrace and mountain restaurant look out over Lake Bohinj, the Bohinj basin and, on a clear day, the main ridge of the Julian Alps with Triglav in the distance. The cable car has been carrying visitors since the 1960s and was an important step in turning Bohinj into a year-round destination.

Vogel is best known as a ski area, with slopes that give wide views and often hold snow into spring. In summer it becomes an easy way to reach high-mountain walking without a long climb. A network of marked paths leads across the pastures, and a nature trail with information boards explains the plants, animals and the traditional cattle grazing of the area. The chairlift to Orlove Glave takes you higher still, to a point where the walks toward Rjavina and the Triglav Lakes begin for strong walkers. The upper pastures are also used by paragliders, who launch in good weather and glide down to the lake shore.

The cable car pairs naturally with the other sights in the area. Lake Bohinj, Slap Savica Waterfall and the Mostnica Gorge all lie within a short drive, and Vogar viewpoint offers another angle on the valley. Visitors who want to see the lake at close quarters can combine the ride up with a boat trip across Lake Bohinj. The lower station is close to the lake and to the walking route that runs along its shore, so it is also possible to arrive on foot.

Weather matters here more than usual. Clouds often fill the valley in the morning and clear at midday, so it is worth checking the forecast and webcams before going up. The upper area is cooler than the valley, even in summer, and a light jacket is useful. The cable car is a good choice for older visitors and families with small children, because it opens up alpine views with almost no effort, and in the quieter shoulder seasons the pastures are peaceful.
