Newly designed square for summer events

Stara Fužina is one of the old mountain villages of Bohinj, on the northern side of the lake in the Julian Alps within Triglav National Park, and it keeps a traditional character, with timber-framed houses, hayracks and narrow lanes. In recent years the centre of the village has been given a new public square, a modern open space designed to serve as a meeting place for residents and as a stage for events through the season. The square is a simple, practical addition to a village that has a strong sense of community, and it offers a pleasant place to sit among old and new buildings with the mountains in view. The main function of the square is to host gatherings in summer. The small village shops, including Trgovina Krpan, supply food and picnic supplies, and the lake with its beaches and boats is a short walk or ride away. An old stone bridge in the village, linked with the Zois family who ran the ironworks of Bohinj, adds a note of history.

Visitors can combine an evening at the square with a day of walking, swimming or cycling. The village is quiet outside event nights, so the square is also an attractive place to rest. Summer evenings at this altitude can turn cool, so a light jacket is useful.
