Najevska lipa

The Najevska lipa is a very old lime tree that stands near the Najevnik farm at Ludranski Vrh, in the hills above Črna na Koroškem in northern Slovenia, close to the Austrian border. It is a small-leaved lime, Tilia cordata, and it is regarded as one of the thickest and oldest lindens in the country, with an age estimated in the range of several centuries. The trunk is massive and hollow, covered on its shaded side with moss and lichen, and the broad crown spreads over the farmyard, giving shade in summer and a monument-like presence in all seasons.

Lime trees have a special place in Slovene culture. The linden is regarded as the national tree, and for centuries villages planted a lime on the green in front of the church or in the middle of a settlement, where it served as a meeting place, a spot for dances and celebrations and the place where village business was discussed. The tree was believed to protect the community, and old lindens are treated with respect and sometimes protected as natural monuments. The Najevska lipa is among the most famous of them, and the idea that it is the oldest linden in the country is part of its reputation, even though exact age estimates for hollow trees are uncertain and vary.

Local folklore adds to its mystique. One story says that Ottoman raiders buried a treasure in the hills and planted twelve lime trees to mark the place, and that only this one survived. Botanists suggest that the tree's wide form may come from several trunks that grew together over the centuries, which would explain its unusual girth. The tree has been used as a meeting place for gatherings in more recent times as well, and the farm beside it keeps up the tradition of welcoming visitors. Such stories are folk tradition rather than documented history, but they are part of what makes the tree interesting to visit.

The setting is rural and calm. Ludranski Vrh is a scattered hamlet of farms on a ridge, with meadows, orchards and woods around it, and views stretch toward the Karavanke and, on a clear day, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. A visit to the tree is easily combined with a walk or drive through the mountain farms above Črna and with the mining heritage and walks of the area, including the climb toward Peca and the Mountain Hut on Petzen. The tree suits nature lovers, photographers and anyone interested in folklore. It stands near a working farm, so visitors should keep to paths, respect private land and avoid climbing or damaging the trunk.
