Najevska lipa

Nestled near the Najevnik homestead in Ludranski Vrh above Črna na Koroškem, the Najevska lipa stands as one of Slovenia’s most remarkable natural landmarks. Estimated to be around 700–790 years old, this small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) is the thickest linden tree in the country, with a circumference of over 10 meters and a height of 24 meters. Its hollow trunk, covered in moss and lichens on the northern side, hints at centuries of endurance and changing seasons.

Local folklore surrounds the Najevska lipa, including tales of Turks burying treasure and planting twelve lime trees to mark the spot—though botanists believe the tree actually grew from seven trunks. Today, only this “mother of all Slovenian linden trees” remains, making it a symbol of resilience for the region.

The tree holds a special place in Slovenian history as well. In August 1991, it served as the meeting site for the first gathering of Slovene statesmen after the country’s independence, a tradition that continues annually.

Visitors find the area peaceful and scenic, surrounded by the Karavanke Mountains and Kamniško-Savinjske Alps.
