Knieps (Königov Vrh)

Črna na Koroškem is a small town in the upper Meža valley, in the Koroška region of northern Slovenia, at the foot of the massif of Peca and close to the Austrian border. The town grew up around mining and metalworking, and the hills above it are covered with spruce and beech forest, scattered farms and meadows. Knieps, also called Königov vrh, is one of the hills above the town, and it belongs to a landscape of quiet ridges and farm hamlets that attract walkers who want solitude rather than famous summits. The Meža valley has a long industrial history. Lead and zinc were mined in the region for centuries, and the mines of Mežica and Črna were among the main employers of the valley until the late twentieth century. A walk in the hills above Črna therefore often passes places that have a link with the working past, and a visit to the museum of mining at Mežica or the underground tours of Podzemlje Pece helps to understand it.

The walking is straightforward. Marked paths and forest roads climb from the valley through woods to meadows and ridges, with views over the Meža valley and the long ridges of the Karavanke and the Pohorje in the distance. On clear days the Austrian side of the frontier can be seen to the north. The gradients are generally moderate, so the walks suit people of average fitness, and the lack of crowds is part of the attraction. Spring brings flowers to the meadows, autumn brings colour to the beech woods, and in winter quiet paths can be used for snowshoeing, though conditions vary and snow can make the forest roads difficult.

The area offers other attractions within a short distance. The Najevska lipa, an ancient linden tree at a nearby farm, is among the most famous trees in Slovenia, and the high summit of Kordeževa glava, the top of the Peca massif, lies above the valley. A mountain hut on the Petzen side of the border is another goal for longer walks, and farms in the hills offer simple food and local products.

The hills suit walkers who like quiet country and who are comfortable with navigation. Carry a map, water and a rain layer, and check local conditions, since paths may be little used and signs can be missing.
