Muda Gate (Vrata Muda) in Koper is a striking reminder of the city’s Venetian past and a must-see for history enthusiasts exploring Slovenia’s coastal gem. Built in 1516 in the Renaissance style, this elegant stone archway once served as the main entrance to Koper’s fortified old town from the harbor, when the city was still an island. Today, it stands as the only surviving gate of the original twelve that once protected the town, making it a rare and significant historical monument.

The gate’s design is rich in symbolism and detail, featuring lion heads and sun carvings that reflect Koper’s ties to the Venetian Republic. Heraldic reliefs and intricate stonework showcase the craftsmanship of master stonemason Marino de Vedelo, who constructed the gate under the commission of podesta Sebastiano Contarini. The name “Muda” comes from the Italian word for “tax,” as the gate was historically used for collecting tolls and controlling access to the city.

Located at Pristaniška ulica 47, Muda Gate is open to visitors 24 hours a day and is free to access. While it may be modest in size, its historical significance and blend of Renaissance architecture amidst modern surroundings make it well worth a visit. Take time to admire the gate’s details and imagine the bustling activity that once surrounded this important entrance to Koper’s old town.
