Lahinja Regional Park

Lahinja Regional Park lies in Bela Krajina, the lowland corner of southeastern Slovenia that borders Croatia. The name Bela Krajina is generally explained as White March, after the birch trees whose pale bark gives the countryside a distinctive look, and the park is a protected river landscape in the same region. Its centrepiece is the Lahinja River, a slow, winding stream that rises from karst springs and flows through meadows, marshes and wooded banks, with a rich range of wetland life.

The geology explains the scenery. The ground here is limestone, honeycombed with caves and sinkholes, so water moves between the surface and underground channels, creating springs, seasonal lakes and damp meadows. That mosaic of wet and dry ground supports a variety of habitats in a modest area. Birds such as kingfishers and herons are regular sights, and otters live along the water; the park is also important for amphibians, dragonflies, bats and rare plants. It is part of the European Natura 2000 network, which reflects the value of its wildlife.

Visitors can explore by foot, bicycle or boat. Marked paths and educational trails link the main points of interest, and cycling routes run along quiet country lanes between villages. On the water, canoe rides can be arranged from the Klepčev tourist farm in Pusti Gradec, which offers a peaceful way to look at the banks and birds without disturbing them. Local farms around the park sell honey, oil and farm produce, and several of them are nearby: the Oljarna Pekarič oil mill, the Šokčev Dvor in Žuniči, local honey producers and the community vineyard cottage of Drašiči.

Bela Krajina has strong folk traditions that colour a visit. The region is known for its embroidered costumes, painted Easter eggs, ritual midsummer customs and a gentle rural pace that is quite different from the Alpine and coastal areas that draw most visitors to Slovenia. The nearest towns are Črnomelj and Metlika, which have castles, museums and local cuisine to round out a day.

The park suits birdwatchers, cyclists, paddlers and families who like quiet landscapes, and it is a good choice for anyone who wants an off-the-beaten-path corner of Slovenia. Spring, when the meadows are green and the birds are busy, and early autumn, when the mist hangs low over the river, are the most atmospheric times. Wear waterproof shoes after rain, because the low ground stays wet.
