Community Vineyard Cottage of Drašiči

Bela Krajina is a gentle region of hills and river valleys in the south of Slovenia, and its wine culture has always been tied to the village rather than to the individual estate. The Community Vineyard Cottage of Drašiči, known locally as the Soseska zidanica, the neighbours' wine cottage, is one of the best surviving examples. A zidanica is a small vineyard cottage, a common feature of the Slovenian wine landscape, where growers store wine and gather with friends, and here the building belongs to a whole community of households rather than to a single family. It is a rare example of a tradition that once existed in many villages and has almost disappeared.

The central idea was a kind of village wine bank. Households took part in the cooperative by contributing wine from their own vineyards, which was kept in shared barrels in the cottage. Members could then borrow from the common stock when they needed wine for a feast, a wedding or a work party, and they repaid the loan with a little extra, in the manner of interest. The surplus supported communal needs, and the stock could cover costs such as church upkeep, village celebrations and funerals, so the cellar worked at once as a bank, a social club and a mutual aid society. Records were kept with notched tally sticks, each carrying the mark of a household and the quantity taken, and one person was appointed to supervise the system and keep the accounts. The arrangement depended on trust and was backed by community pressure, which kept it running smoothly for generations.

Today the cottage is run by local winegrowers and remains a place where the old tradition is kept alive. Visitors can learn about how the system worked, see the barrels and the tally sticks, and taste the local wine, above all Metliška črnina, the dark red wine for which the Metlika area is known. The tasting is as much about stories and neighbourliness as about the wine, and the hosts take pleasure in explaining the customs. It is best to arrange a visit in advance with local tourism contacts, since the cottage is not a commercial cellar with fixed hours.

The cottage is part of a wider Bela Krajina experience. It suits wine lovers, people interested in rural social history and cyclists on a tour of the region. The cottage shows Bela Krajina’s community spirit at its clearest, and it is a rare piece of Slovenia’s living heritage that came through the years after World War II.
