Kurentovanje carnival
UNESCO carnival with Kurenti masks in Ptuj
Kurentovanje, held each year in the Štajerska region—most famously in the historic town of Ptuj—is Slovenia’s largest and most vibrant Shrovetide carnival. Recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, Kurentovanje is a spectacular celebration of spring’s arrival and the region’s deep-rooted folk traditions. For more than 60 years, this carnival has transformed Ptuj and surrounding Štajerska towns into a lively stage for parades, music, masquerade balls, and colorful exhibitions.
The heart of Kurentovanje is the iconic Kurenti (or Koranti), mysterious figures dressed in sheepskin costumes, adorned with cowbells and elaborate masks. According to tradition, the Kurenti dance and leap through the streets to chase away winter and evil spirits, ushering in a season of prosperity and renewal. Their mesmerizing presence, accompanied by other traditional masks and characters, creates a unique and energetic atmosphere that draws visitors from across Slovenia and around the world.
The festival’s program spans several days, with highlights including the mystical Kurent’s Jump at midnight to open the festivities, grand folk and carnival parades, and guided tours that delve into the event’s rich ethnological background. Kurentovanje is ranked among the world’s top ten carnivals by Lonely Planet, standing alongside Venice and Rio de Janeiro for its cultural significance and festive spirit.
Whether you’re drawn by the folklore, the music, or the sheer spectacle, Kurentovanje offers an unforgettable immersion into Štajerska’s living heritage and the joyous anticipation of spring.
