Kayak and boat tours on the Krka River

Novo Mesto sits on a tight loop of the Krka river, and the old town stands on a rocky promontory almost surrounded by water. Seen from the river, the town looks very different from how it does from the street: the houses of the Breg, the old riverside quarter, rise directly from the bank, their cellars and gardens reaching to the water's edge, and above them the tower of the chapter church dominates the skyline. Paddling or drifting along the Krka is one of the most relaxed ways to see the place, and it is a popular summer activity for residents and visitors.

In the summer months, canoes, kayaks, traditional wooden boats and stand-up paddleboards can be rented at the town beach, Mestna plaža, on the edge of the old town, and rentals are usually charged by the hour. The Krka at this point is gentle and slow, without rapids or strong currents, so it is suitable for beginners and families, and instruction is available for those who have not paddled before. Trips typically last one to three hours, and visitors can choose a short loop around the old town or a longer paddle downstream through the meadows and woods below. Life jackets are provided, and it is wise to wear a hat and sunscreen and to bring water, since there is little shade on the open stretches.

The route passes beneath several bridges, including old and new ones, and a pedestrian bridge that links the banks, and along the way the views change continually: houses on the cliff, gardens, willows and the occasional fisherman. The river banks are full of life, and kingfishers, herons, ducks and swans can be seen, while fish are visible in the clear water on calm days. Downstream, the river passes the village of Otočec, where the Otočec Castle stands on an island in the stream, one of the few water castles in Slovenia, and this makes a pretty destination for a longer excursion.

The Krka is also the setting for swimming. Several Swimming locations near the Krka River offer gravel banks and shallow spots where families gather in summer, and the water is mild enough for a dip in July and August. The river fits well with a day in the area. Trška Gora Hill, with its old linden tree and wine cottages, the Gorjanci Hills, with Gospodična Mountain Hut and Trdinov Vrh, offer walking and wine tasting, so a morning on the water can be followed by an afternoon in the vineyards. Check the opening season and rental prices locally, and avoid paddling after heavy rain, when the current is stronger and the water muddy.
