400-year-old linden tree (on Trška Gora Hill)

On Trška Gora, the vineyard hill that rises above Novo Mesto in Lower Carniola, stands a very old linden tree that locals take pride in. According to local tradition it has been growing for about four hundred years, a span that takes it back to the early seventeenth century, and it is said to have been planted around the time the hilltop church was being built. Its trunk is enormously thick, and it is counted among the stoutest linden trees in the region and in the country. Standing beside it, you can see how much room a tree takes when it has had centuries to grow, and you can get a sense of the continuity that such trees represent in a village landscape.

The linden holds a special place in Slovenian culture. Known in Slovene as lipa, it is regarded as a national tree and has long been a symbol of community life. Villages traditionally planted a linden at the centre, beside the church or at a crossroads, and people gathered in its shade for meetings, dances and celebrations. The tree on Trška Gora belongs to this tradition, and it is easy to imagine generations of pilgrims and villagers resting under its branches. In early summer, when the tree flowers, the scent fills the air and bees swarm to it, and the blossom is used for tea in local households.

The Church of the Nativity of Mary, the pilgrimage church that gives the hill its focus, stands close to the tree and is the usual reason for climbing the hill. Nearby are a monument to a well-loved local musician, Lojze Slak, who is remembered across Slovenia for his accordion playing, and a traditional vineyard cottage, a zidanica, of the type found all over Dolenjska. These small cottages are used for storing wine and for sociable weekend gatherings, and they are part of the hill's character.

Trška Gora is a lovely place for a gentle outing. Paths and quiet roads lead up through vines and orchards, and from the top the views stretch over the rolling Dolenjska countryside, the roofs of Novo Mesto and the line of the Gorjanci Hills on the horizon. The area also suits cycling and picnics. If you want to extend your day, the Trdinov Vrh and the Gospodična Mountain Hut and Gospodična Spring are reachable in the Gorjanci, and the Krka River below offers Kayak and boat tours and Swimming locations in summer.

There is no admission fee, and the tree can be visited at any time. It is best seen in early summer, when the linden is in flower, or in autumn, when the vineyards turn gold. It suits families, walkers and cyclists, and anyone who likes quiet places with a sense of history. Together with the Trška Gora Hill views, the tree is one of Novo Mesto’s quiet treasures and a symbol of Slovenia’s rural tradition.
