Trška Gora Hill
Historic wine hill framed by three castles
Trška Gora Hill, rising above Novo Mesto at 428 meters, is a beloved destination for wine lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking a taste of Slovenia’s Dolenjska region. Renowned for its dense concentration of vineyard cottages, Trška Gora is the heart of local winemaking, especially the production of cviček—a unique, light red wine that has become a symbol of the area’s viticultural heritage. The hill’s slopes are dotted with charming cottages and rows of vines, creating a picturesque landscape that changes with the seasons.
The history of Trška Gora dates back to the Middle Ages, first mentioned in 1135, and its name is thought to be linked to the region’s centuries-old tradition of vine cultivation. At the summit stands the Church of the Nativity of Virgin Mary, built in 1620, alongside a monumental linden tree planted in 1622—one of the thickest in Slovenia. The hill is also home to a monument honoring Lojze Slak, a beloved Slovenian musician, and a bench dedicated to the first Cviček Princess, celebrating the region’s musical and wine traditions.
From the top, visitors enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, framed by the castles of Otočec, Hmeljnik, and Stari grad. Whether you’re exploring the vineyard cottages, relaxing on a stone bench, or sampling local wines, Trška Gora Hill offers a memorable blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and warm Dolenjska hospitality.
