Herb garden

The herb garden at Žiče Charterhouse, Žička kartuzija, is a small planted area that recalls the practical wisdom of the Carthusian monks who lived here, in a quiet wooded valley near Slovenske Konjice in Štajerska. The charterhouse was founded in the twelfth century and was the first Carthusian monastery in the Slovene lands. Herbs were at the centre of monastic life, and across Europe monasteries kept the knowledge of plants alive through the Middle Ages, growing them for the kitchen and the infirmary, copying treatises on their properties and passing on the recipes of teas, syrups, ointments and tinctures. A garden like this is a living reminder of that tradition.

The Carthusians had a particular reputation as herbalists. The order, which lived a hermit-like life in silence, became known for medicinal and aromatic preparations, and the most famous example is the herbal liqueur made by the order in France, whose recipe uses a large number of plants and remains a closely guarded secret. Monks in other charterhouses also cultivated gardens, and at Žiče, the setting among monastery walls gives the plantings historical context. The plants in a garden of this kind usually include familiar kitchen herbs such as sage, thyme, rosemary and mint, along with plants of old medicine such as lemon balm, chamomile, calendula, valerian, hyssop and lavender, each with its own use and folklore, and many of which are known to be grown in the region for centuries.

Walking through the beds is a sensory pleasure. The scents are strongest on warm days, when bees and butterflies work among the flowers, and the pattern of beds and paths gives a sense of order and calm. Labels or information boards, and sometimes guided tours, explain what each plant was used for, how to prepare a tea or a salve and the beliefs that surrounded it, so the visit adds to knowledge as well as enjoyment. Special events, such as museum days and herbal workshops, may bring additional activities, and it is worth asking what is on during a visit. The garden is part of a broader attempt to restore the monastery grounds and to bring the site back to life.

The monastery's other features lie close by. The church, the ruins of the cloister and cells and the old inn at the gate, known as Gastuž, are within a short walk, and the valley offers quiet paths. Slovenske Konjice and its wine road are a short drive away.

The garden suits walkers, garden lovers, families and anyone interested in herbal traditions. Late spring and summer are the best seasons for scent and colour, and opening arrangements should be checked before travelling.
