At the Žiče Charterhouse, a quiet walking route called the energy pathway leads visitors through the grounds and the nearby woods, stopping at marked places that its designers identified by dowsing as spots of special calm. The trail has a theme of silent energies, which fits the history of the site: the Carthusians who lived here for more than six centuries followed one of the strictest rules of silence and solitude in the Christian world, and the valley still has a stillness that many visitors notice at once. The pathway is meant as an invitation to slow down and listen, in the manner of the monks themselves.
As with other trails of this kind, it is useful to know what is claimed. Dowsing, or radiesthesia, is the practice of searching for hidden water, minerals or energy using rods or a pendulum, and there is no scientific evidence that it detects anything beyond the unconscious movements of the person using it. The energy spots along the route are therefore best understood as places chosen for their atmosphere, not as measurable sources of power. Whether or not one accepts the idea, the choice of locations is attractive, and the trail takes visitors to benches and clearings with pleasant views, where it is natural to pause.
The route follows gravel paths through the garden of the monastery and into the surrounding forest, and it is level or gently sloping, so it is suitable for most visitors. Information panels explain the history of the Carthusians, their daily routine of prayer, work and study, and the way the monks lived in separate cells while sharing certain meals and services. The panels also describe each of the marked spots, which usually have a short text inviting a few minutes of quiet. Many visitors use the pauses for meditation or simply to rest, and the walk takes an hour or less at a relaxed pace. The route is open throughout the year, and special guided walks are sometimes held on days such as International Museum Day.
The pathway fits well into a visit to the whole complex. The Monastery Garden, the Herb garden and the Winter Monastic Garden show the plants that the monks grew for food and medicine, and Gastuž, the old guest house, is part of the site. The ruins and restored rooms of the Žička kartuzija Monastery are the main attraction, and various highly-rated restaurants in the area serve regional food. Wear comfortable shoes, and visit in the morning for the greatest calm.
